Deca, Exa, Giga, Mega, Peta, Tera, Zetta. Those are the 7 widths of the original Lexend fonts by Thomas Jockin, each 1 looser than the last, and the plain Lexend on this page is the same as Lexend Deca, the tightest of them, since the July 2021 update aligned its Regular with Deca’s slightly heavier one.
Where did the idea come from? Bonnie Shaver-Troup was working as an educational therapist in Silicon Valley with students who had dyslexia and other reading trouble, and she started changing the spacing between certain letters in their assignments. Reading and comprehension got better. Her conclusion, which she states with some force, is that a lot of reading problems are visual, caused by text set too tight for the eye to process, and that you can change the outcome by changing the font. Lexend was built on that bet. It was meant at first for dyslexic and struggling readers, and she soon found that other readers got on with it too.
So the letters are open and the spacing is generous. A line in Lexend takes about 10.6% more width than the same words in Arial, and that is the design working as intended, extra air between letters.
It has 9 weights, Thin at 100 to Black at 900, with a slashed zero, case-sensitive forms and 1 stylistic set. Google’s page also credits Santiago Orozco, Héctor Gómez and Superunion. A HyperExpansion axis, to vary the space inside and around letters, is planned. If a reader in your audience finds Regular too snug, step up to 1 of the wider Lexend cousins before you start adding letter-spacing by hand.
