Headlines in Devanagari have a vertical problem. The vowel marks above and below the letters need room, and that room pushes lines apart at the moment a headline wants to be stacked tight. Khand’s answer, from Indian Type Foundry, was to shorten the marks.
The other decisions follow from that:
- The consonants are “big on the body”, filling most of the line’s height.
- Vowel marks were simplified as well as shortened, in keeping with the modular build of the whole design.
- Dot-shaped marks were rounded so they stay distinct from the rest.
- Counters are kept very open, with every stroke the same thickness.
Sanchit Sawaria and Jyotish Sonowal drew the Devanagari, and Satya Rajpurohit the Latin, which is compact too and runs narrow, so a long English headline fits where a normal sans would wrap. The 5 weights go from Light to Bold. Light and Regular will handle a short paragraph; Semi Bold and Bold are the ones made for a single word or a front-page headline.
