Literacy specialists used to build their reading primers by hand, pulling 1 letter from this font and the next from that one, because nothing on the market had every character their language needed in a form a new reader could handle. The pages came out messy and confusing. SIL International made Andika to end that.
The brief is a single idea: letters that a beginning reader will not mix up. Andika is a sans, since some literacy workers prefer teaching with forms that are simpler and less cluttered than a serif’s, and every shape is drawn to be told apart from its neighbors at a glance. Victor Gaultney drafted the first basic lowercase. Annie Olsen refined it and built it out into a very large character set, with complete extended Cyrillic included.
In May 2022 the family was upgraded. It gained weights and full Latin and Cyrillic coverage, the rendering improved a lot, and the download now holds Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, with Greek and Vietnamese as well.

Who should use it? Anyone printing reading material for children or adults learning to read, particularly in a language with unusual letters or accents. We would also try it for signs and forms meant for a general public, where any confusion between letters costs something.
