PT Sans

Peter the Great introduced his civil type in 1708 to 1710, and PT Sans was made for its 300th anniversary. ParaType released it in 2009 as part of Public Types of Russian Federation, a project with a plain aim: let people across Russia read and write in their own languages. The Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications funded it.

So the Cyrillic goes deep. Next to standard Western and Central European Latin and Cyrillic, it carries the letters of every title language of the national republics in the Russian Federation, and most languages of the neighboring countries.

Alexandra Korolkova drew it, with Olga Umpeleva assisting and Vladimir Yefimov supervising. Their model was the Russian sans serif of the later 20th century, given the open features of newer humanist designs.

The full family has 8 styles:

• Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, the standard set
• 2 Narrow styles for tight setting
• 2 Caption styles for small sizes

This download carries the 4 standard ones. ParaType had business documents in mind, and also direction signs, diagrams and the screens of information kiosks; we would add multilingual sites across Russia to that. PT Serif is its partner from the same project, and Google Fonts has carried PT Sans since September 2010.
