The name comes from the cedar. Sugi is the Japanese cedar, with its straight, thick trunk and branches, and MOTOYA wanted the strokes of this rounded gothic to carry that same upright sturdiness. Maru means round, and every stroke ends in a rounded terminal.

Underneath sits a design from the 1950s. MOTOYA developed it and first released it for Android under the name MotoyaLMaru W3 mono, and it now goes by Kosugi Maru, with a regular gothic sibling called Kosugi.

Contrast is low and the metrics are monospaced, so Latin letters and Japanese characters line up on a steady grid. 1 weight only. For a transit app or a sign at a playground it reads clearly and stays friendly.
