Jura began with Kayah Li. Daniel Johnson was drawing a Kayah Li range for FreeMono, part of the FreeFont project, and found that the strokes and curves he had settled on would also make a Latin alphabet. He built one, then Greek and Cyrillic, and the original Kayah Li glyphs stayed in the font. Burmese itself was never part of it, and he says so plainly.
The look sits in the Eurostile vein, squared, technical letters of the type you expect on a control panel or a sci-fi title card. Jura has been on Google Fonts since May 2011, with Cyreal sharing the credit.
What is in the font
5 weights from Light to Bold, no italics, and 1,052 characters, plus more OpenType than a display-leaning sans usually bothers with. There are true small caps, a caps-to-small-caps feature, a slashed zero for anyone setting codes or serial numbers, a stylistic set with alternates, discretionary ligatures and contextual alternates.
That slashed zero and the small caps make it a fair choice for interface labels and dashboards, which is where we think it does best, in Medium or Semi Bold, with Light kept for larger sizes.
A note on the name, since you may run into it: there is an unrelated Jura serif by Ed Merritt, and the 2 have nothing in common past the word.
