An alphabet of the Caucasus
In parts of what is now Azerbaijan and Dagestan, between the 5th and the 12th century, people wrote the Caucasian Albanian language, a dialect of Old Udi, in an alphabet of 52 letters. It ran left to right and had capitals and small letters both. Greek writing was probably its model. Tradition gives the invention to Mesrop Mashtots, though that attribution is not certain.
Not much call for it today outside scholarship, which is the point of having it in Noto: a font for every modern and ancient language. The Monotype design team drew this unmodulated sans, and it supports 76 characters from 2 Unicode blocks, Caucasian Albanian and the Combining Half Marks, with Latin in the same file for commentary. 1 Regular weight, added to Google Fonts in November 2020.
