Inscriptions of ancient Gandhara
Kharoshthi reads right to left. It is an Indic abugida that was in use from the 4th century BCE to the 3rd century CE in Gandhara, the region that is now Pakistan and northeastern Afghanistan, for writing Gandhari Prakrit and Sanskrit.
Nobody writes it today, so this font is for the people who study it, a scholar quoting a text in a paper or a museum preparing a label. Google’s Noto project, which aims to cover every script ancient or modern, includes an unmodulated sans design for it, drawn by the Monotype design team, with a stylistic set and a Latin for transliteration.
Will a sans look odd next to images of writing that old? A little, maybe. For setting citations, though, a clean, even text face is what you want, and that is what this is.
