Rubik started life as part of the Chrome Cube Lab project. Philipp Hubert and Sebastian Fischer of Hubert & Fischer drew it as a sans serif with slightly rounded corners.

The family grew in stages. Meir Sadan redrew the Hebrew in 2015 and Alexei Vanyashin of Cyreal redrew the Cyrillic in 2016. Arabic is in the set now as well, and Daniel Grumer and Omaima Dajani are among the credited designers. So a page that mixes Hebrew or Arabic with Latin can stay inside 1 family.

Styles and figures

7 weights from Light to Black, each with an italic, 14 styles in all. Tabular figures and a slashed zero are there for interface and data work.

A monospaced cousin, Rubik Mono One, was made from the Black roman.

Our opinion: Rubik is at its best from Medium upward, in a heading or a button label, where the rounding reads as friendly. In long text at Light the softness is hard to see and it turns into a plain, slightly wide sans.
