Fragments of an old psalter

Somewhere around the 6th and 7th centuries CE, Middle Persian was being written in a joined, right to left abjad that scholars now call Psalter Pahlavi. Nobody writes it today, and Google’s Noto project covers it anyway, since the collection aims at every language, modern and ancient.

The Unicode block for it is small, and this font covers 37 characters from it in 98 drawn glyphs, with Latin and its extended accents added for the notes and translations around a transcription. Monotype’s design team drew it. Since the letters connect, the font leans on contextual alternates and glyph composition to join them, and your software has to support complex text shaping for that to happen.

The design is a sans with no modulation in the stroke, plain enough for a catalog entry or a museum label next to a Latin caption in the same family.
