On a Hebrew website the default was often Arial, and Alef was made to give designers something else. Hagilda, with Mushon Zer-Aviv credited alongside, built it for the screen from the start, drawn to the pixel and hinted by hand in Microsoft’s Visual TrueType so it renders cleanly at small sizes, especially on Windows.
The numerals are the detail to look at. They are proportional old style figures that rise above and drop below the x-height, chosen because they sit well with both Hebrew and Latin text. We think that is a thoughtful call for a bilingual font.
The Hebrew comes with programmed niqqud, the vowel points, and the Latin side covers many European languages. There are 2 weights, Regular and Bold.
Before it settled under its own name, Alef was served in Google’s Early Access program as Alef Hebrew. Hagilda also wrote up the design process, sketches and notes on hinting included, on a Hebrew blog.
