Ledger for the spring caravan
Mahajani was a working script. Traders and accountants in what is now northwest India and eastern Pakistan kept their books in it, in Hindi and Marwari and in Punjabi too, and it stayed in use until around the middle of the 20th century. It runs left to right like its Indic relatives.
Google’s Noto project sets out to cover every writing system, modern and ancient, and that is how a merchant’s script ended up with a digital font. Noto Sans Mahajani is the unmodulated, sans serif design for it, from Monotype’s designers. It supports the Common Indic Number Forms block as well and carries a matching Latin for notes and transliteration.
Who needs it? Archivists digitizing old ledgers, or a museum putting a caption next to a page of accounts. 1 style is enough for that.
