A research institute ordered this one. Inria, a national institute for digital research, needed type for its communication that showed where it stood, somewhere between the human side and the technical one, and Grégori Vincens and Jérémie Hornus at Black Foundry answered with 2 families. Inria Serif got a more rational drawing. Inria Sans became a humanist sans with an openly contemporary look.
The figure handling is why we would reach for it:
- old style and lining figures
- tabular and proportional widths for both
- fractions, ordinals, superscripts and subscripts
- 2 stylistic sets, plus case sensitive forms for all-caps lines
That is a lot of number work for a family of 3 weights, Light to Bold, each with an italic. Annual reports and research posters come to mind, anywhere a table of results sits beside running text. The italics keep almost exactly the width of the romans, so switching a word to italic inside a tight table cell won’t shove the column.
