More wonky than clinical, by its designers’ own account. Dan Reynolds and Mathieu Réguer gave Biryani, a monolinear geometric sans, the strong flavor of several early geometric typefaces from the last century.
The designers are honest about its limits. It is meant for text, they say, though not for long, immersive reading; the letterforms are a little too display for that. Think product pages, app screens, menus, headlines with a paragraph under them.
It covers Latin and Devanagari, enough for Hindi, Marathi, Nepali and most Western and Central European languages. 7 weights ship in the download, Extra Light at 200 to Black at 900, skipping Medium. Reynolds, a type designer in Berlin, leads the project, and it has been on Google Fonts since 2015.
