Type “r/” in Reddit Sans and the 2 characters fuse. A default ligature joins the lowercase r and the slash into 1 wider, tighter glyph, so the start of every subreddit name reads as a single mark. Of all the details in the family, that one tells you most plainly who it was made for.
Stephen Hutchings, a Sydney designer who works across type, data visualization and front-end code, drew it for Reddit together with OrangeRed, the company’s in-house brand team. It is a humanist sans, and Reddit Sans Condensed and Reddit Mono are its siblings.
The stylistic sets have names from an ice cream counter. Vanilla is the default, and Chocolate, Strawberry and Fudge swap in other shapes for letters such as I, l, i, j, g and a. A fourth set gives a round zero, and there is a slashed one as well. Fractions are smart enough to leave dates alone, and the tabular figures keep the same width in every weight, handy for vote counts that change boldness on hover.
Hutchings went through 24 versions, from 0.001 to 1.014, before landing on what you get here: 8 weights, Extra Light to Black, each with an italic.
