Around 1840 Naum Veqilharxhi invented an alphabet for Albanian. It is called Vithkuqi, or Büthakukye, it runs left to right, and it is bicameral, with capitals and small letters in pairs the way Latin has them.
Noto Sans Vithkuqi gives that alphabet a modern sans face. Lewis McGuffie designed it for Google’s Noto project, which sets out to cover every modern and ancient writing system, and it was published in 2022. It comes in 4 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, so a heading in Vithkuqi can be set heavier than the text under it, and basic Latin rides along for mixed passages.
We’d use it in a history of Albanian writing or on an exhibition panel that quotes the script.
