Light text on a dark background, under 10 pt. That is the unusual instruction the designers attached to Orbit, and it tells you where the idea came from: the screen of a coding editor.
Sooun Cho of JAMO started from the monospaced Latin fonts that programmers use. Hangul is mostly monospaced already, each syllable sitting in its own square, so what Orbit borrows is the appearance, carried into the Hangul and the punctuation. Serifs meet the stems at right angles, the round parts are drawn as clean circles, and the whole thing leans on symmetry and on strokes that connect, the idea being orbitals, something a little cosmic and futuristic.
It sets wide, much wider than a typical Latin sans, so English lines run long. 1 Regular, 3,309 characters, with small caps among the features. On Google Fonts since 2023.
We’d take the designers at their word and keep it small and bright on dark, in a terminal theme or a game interface.
