A small gift for a third birthday

A birthday present started this one. Li Dawei and the team at Zuozi made the typeface for his daughter, nicknamed Little Fern, when she turned 3, and then contributed it to the ZCOOL font project in 2018.

There was a practical aim too. Chinese display fonts that can go straight into a logo were scarce, and XiaoWei was meant to fill some of that gap, with quick, recognizable brush strokes and spacing tuned so it works small as well as large.

The single Regular covers Simplified Chinese with 7,016 characters, Latin included. For a café sign or a product mark we’d happily use it. Long Chinese reading text would want a quieter face.
