Lexend Peta takes up about 62% more width than Arial for the same words, and that spacing is the whole point of it.
Before Lexend, Bonnie Shaver-Troup spent her days as an educational therapist in Silicon Valley, helping students with dyslexia and other reading problems. When she opened up the spacing between certain letters on their assignments, they read better and understood more. Her view, put bluntly, is that many reading problems are visual, caused by type set too tight, and that changing the font can change the result. Lexend grew out of those Shaver-Troup Formulations, as she calls them, drawn with Thomas Jockin, and it was meant to work for readers the way prescription glasses work for the short-sighted.
The collection has 7 families, built on the idea that the fit of a font should suit the individual reader, and Peta is among the roomiest. Santiago Orozco and Héctor Gómez are credited too, as is Superunion. In June 2021 Font Bureau’s work turned every Lexend family into a variable font with a weight axis from Thin to Black. These files give you 9 of those weights.
Is it a body text face for everyone? Probably not; a page of Peta eats space fast. For a struggling reader, or a short heading where the letters should stand well apart, it earns its width.
