Bank Gothic never had a lowercase. Morris Fuller Benton drew it for American Type Founders between 1930 and 1934 as a capitals-only face with a moderate spread of weights and widths. Science Gothic is a close model of it that finally supplies the missing small letters.

It comes from Font Detective LLC, drawn by Thomas Phinney, Vassil Kateliev and Brandon Buerkle, with Igor Freiberger helping early on. They did not stop at the lowercase. What got added:

  • a full lowercase and true small caps
  • extended Latin and extended Cyrillic
  • far more extreme weight and width than Bank Gothic ever had
  • a contrast axis, which at its high end recalls other designs of the period such as Benton’s Broadway of 1927 and R. Hunter Middleton’s Radiant for Ludlow

Plus a slant axis, making 4 in the variable design. The download holds the family’s 9 weights, Thin at 100 up to Black at 900.

The team’s own list of uses runs from superheroes and pulp detectives to banking, science fiction and cosmetics, and we’d believe it, though our pick would be titles and interfaces. A game menu, a mission briefing in a film, the label on a gadget. Tabular figures and a slashed zero are there for readouts, and the small caps help in a longer line, where wall-to-wall capitals in a face this wide get tiring.
