Arsenal is named after a competition. In 2011 the Ukrainian type design contest Mystetsky Arsenal judged entries partly on whether they were of their time and recognizably Ukrainian. Andrij Shevchenko won it, and his entry took the contest’s name and went public.
It is described as a semi-grotesque with traditional forms, built for body text and everyday professional writing. The proportions are narrow, so it sets economically, the apertures are moderate, and there is visible but quiet contrast in the strokes. The same description finds a lyrical streak in the letters and ties it to their Ukrainian roots.
4 styles only, Regular and Bold with their italics, from the foundry Stairsfor. The OpenType side is fuller than that small family suggests. There are small caps, swashes, 2 stylistic sets, fractions, and Cyrillic, Latin and Vietnamese coverage.
For an annual report or a long Ukrainian document this is a sensible choice. It fits more words on a line than Arial does and stays easy on the eye.
