Set a sentence in Lexend Zetta next to the same sentence in Arial and the Zetta version comes out about 83% longer. That is the point of it. Lexend is a set of 7 families that share 1 design and differ in how much room they leave around each letter, and Zetta sits at the far loose end.
The idea belongs to Dr. Bonnie Shaver-Troup. As an educational therapist in Silicon Valley she spaced out some of the letters on the worksheets of students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties, and their fluency and comprehension improved. From there she argues that many reading problems start in the eye, with fonts packed more densely than a struggling reader can sort out. Her spacing rules go by the name Shaver-Troup Formulations, and the project likens fitting a reader with the right Lexend to prescribing glasses.
Thomas Jockin drew the original letters with her; Santiago Orozco, Héctor Gómez and the agency Superunion appear in Google’s credits as well. The full Thin to Black range arrived in June 2021, when Font Bureau made every family variable.
Would we set a paragraph in it? Only for a reader who has been shown to need it. For everyone else Zetta works best on a few words: a logo, a section title, a label with lots of air around it. The files also have a slashed zero, fractions and true superscripts.
