Around 405 CE Mesrop Mashtots created the script, and Armenian has been written in it ever since, by some 12 million people today. It has capitals and lowercase like Latin, runs left to right, and was common across the Ottoman Empire during the 1700s and 1800s.
A wrinkle a typesetter should know about: spelling is split. Armenia uses a reformed orthography introduced in Soviet times, while much of the diaspora keeps the original Mesropian spelling. Either way, the Armenian block and its presentation forms are covered here.
Noto Sans Armenian is the plain, even-stroked member of the Noto family for the script, drawn by the Monotype Design Team. It goes from Thin at 100 to Black at 900 in 9 steps, with a Latin set in matching weights, which makes it a sensible default for an Armenian website or app interface where English sits on the same screen. Use Regular or Medium for text; the Black works in short headlines.
