HERE Technologies, the geo data company, had already chosen Fira Sans as its corporate typeface when it commissioned the extension, and the task was to make it read in Arabic, Devanagari, Georgian, Hebrew and Thai as well. FiraGO came out of that in 2018.
Each new script got its own people. Ralph du Carrois worked on the Arabic with Titus Nemeth and Hasan Abu Afash, Rob Keller, Kimya Gandhi and Natalie Rauch drew the Devanagari, Akaki Razmadze and Anja Meiners the Georgian, Natalie Rauch the Hebrew with Yanek Iontef consulting, and Mark Frömberg the Thai with advice from Ben Mitchell.
bBox Type gave it a new family name on purpose, so it can be installed next to Fira Sans without a conflict, and said all future work on Fira would build on FiraGO.
Fira Sans itself was commissioned by Mozilla and Telefónica for Firefox OS and appeared in 2013, drawn at Carrois Type Design by Erik Spiekermann, Ralph du Carrois and colleagues as an adaptation of Spiekermann’s FF Meta.
On this page: 9 weights from Thin to Black, each with an italic, 2,519 characters per style. The full release also has a Book and a run of hairline weights below Thin, which bBox Type itself calls experimental. Small caps, old style and tabular figures, an alternative 4 and separate alternates for a and g sit in the stylistic sets.
For a product that has to show Hebrew and Thai on the same screen, we would start here.
