People in northern and eastern India wrote Kaithi from the 16th century into the 20th, for Bhojpuri, Awadhi, Maithili, Magahi, Hindustani and several more. It has no headstroke, which sets it apart from Devanagari at a glance. Under British rule it was discouraged everywhere except Bihar.
Noto Sans Kaithi gives the script a plain, unmodulated digital form. The Monotype Design Team drew it for Google’s Noto collection, in 1 Regular style with a Latin set and the Common Indic Number Forms. Kaithi needs software with complex text shaping to come out right.
