In her Silicon Valley practice as an educational therapist, Bonnie Shaver-Troup began pulling certain letters apart in the reading assignments she handed out. Her students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties read more fluently and took in more of what they read, and that left her with a conviction: a lot of reading trouble is visual, a matter of type set too tight to process, and changing the font can change the result.
Lexend turns that conviction into 7 families, each fitted by her own method, the Shaver-Troup Formulations. Tera is the one on this page, and it is very wide. Its lowercase sets about 68% wider than Arial’s, so a sentence in it stretches a long way across the screen and every letter gets a lot of air around it.
Who would use a face this wide? A reader who struggles with crowded text, first of all, and anyone making worksheets or reading apps for that reader. Outside of reading support it makes a striking wide heading too, but we’d keep long paragraphs in a narrower Lexend unless a reader asks for this one.
Credit goes to Thomas Jockin alongside her, with Santiago Orozco and Héctor Gómez named too, and Superunion. In June 2021 Font Bureau turned all the Lexend families into variable fonts with a weight axis, and the download here gives you 9 static weights, Thin at 100 to Black at 900. There is a slashed zero, a stylistic set and Vietnamese support.
