5 widths times 9 weights is the Encode Sans plan: Condensed, Semi Condensed, Normal, Semi Expanded and Expanded, each running Thin to Black. This page has the Semi Condensed slice, a step narrower than the Normal, and for a lot of layout work it is the most practical one, tight enough to save space in a table or a sidebar without looking squeezed.
Impallari Type, a foundry in Rosario, Argentina, led the project, with Pablo Impallari and Andres Torresi drawing the first version and Jacques Le Bailly refining it. It went onto Google Fonts in February 2017.
A full text kit
Encode carries more than a display sans would. Small caps are there, with a caps-to-small-caps switch, and so are old style and lining figures, each in tabular or proportional spacing, plus fractions, ordinals and discretionary ligatures. Vietnamese is covered.
Our habit with superfamilies like this is to pick 2 widths and stick to them. Semi Condensed for the data and the labels, Normal for the paragraphs, and the weights do the rest.
