James Evans devised the first syllabics in 1840, for several Indigenous languages in Canada, and the system grew from there into a whole family of left to right abugidas. Google’s notes put its users at about 0.5 million today, mostly in Canada and now and then in the United States.
The Noto version covers the main Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics block, the Extended block and the Spacing Modifier Letters. Where the script is in use now:
- Cree languages
- Inuktitut, which in Nunavut shares official status with the Latin alphabet
- Ojibwe
- Blackfoot
Dakelh (Carrier), Chipewyan, Slavey, Tłı̨chǫ and Dane-zaa were once written with it too, so history and archive projects have reason to load it.
There are 9 weights from Thin to Black, all upright, and 2 stylistic sets in the feature list for alternate forms. We would reach for Regular and Bold on signs and school handouts, and keep Thin for big display sizes where a hairline syllabic still holds together.
