A road sign alphabet has 1 job, to be read from a moving car, and nobody at the US Federal Highway Administration was thinking about a Thin Italic when they published the Standard Alphabets for Traffic Control Devices. Delve Fonts took those Highway Gothic letters as a starting point anyway and grew them into 18 styles.
That took work. The shapes were adjusted first so they would read at small sizes on a screen, and later for display sizes, and the lighter weights got the most of that attention.
The result keeps the plain, open, slightly mechanical feel of the signs and covers far more ground: 9 weights from 100 to 900, an italic for each, Cyrillic and Vietnamese, a slashed zero and tabular figures. Red Hat sponsored the project along with Google Fonts.
Delve Withrington, Dave Bailey and Thomas Jockin designed it. There is a monospaced sibling, Overpass Mono, for code.
Use it for signage, naturally. It would also run a dashboard or a long help page without complaint.
