Raleway began as a single weight, and a thin one. Matt McInerney drew that first hairline version, and in 2012 Pablo Impallari and Rodrigo Fuenzalida built it out into 9 weights, with Igino Marini handling the kerning through his iKern system. A thorough review in 2016 added the italics.
That growth explains a lot about how it behaves. Its thin end is still the most distinctive part, the weights that look best large and airy on a fashion site or a wedding card, while the heavier weights carry headlines with ease. The family calls itself a display face, and we’d take that at its word; long body text in Raleway gets tiring.
Under the hood
The default letters lean neo-grotesque, and a stylistic alternate swaps in shapes taken from geometric sans serifs. There are 11 stylistic sets in total, small caps, standard and discretionary ligatures, and the 936 characters reach Cyrillic and Vietnamese along with a very full set of Latin accents. The italics run slightly narrower than the romans.
18 styles in all, Thin at 100 to Black at 900, each with its italic. There is also a sister family, Raleway Dots.
