Impact was the seed. Robert Leuschke began Alumni Sans from that heavy black face and kept going in the other direction, adding weight after weight until the family reached a hairline Thin at the far end.
So the 2 ends are the show pieces, Black and Thin, both meant for display, and the 7 weights in between are where you can set real text: subheads, sidebars, a pull quote, the odd short paragraph. All of it is condensed. Alumni takes about a third less width than Arial for the same words, which is the reason to choose it when a long headline has to fit a narrow column.
Every weight has an italic and the italics keep the roman’s width. Small caps, tabular figures and fractions are in there, along with Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
