An Argentine foundry drawing Devanagari is not the usual story. Omnibus-Type, based in Argentina, already had Archivo Narrow, and Pragati Narrow was made to sit beside it as a Devanagari companion, with the same condensed proportions and the same vertical and horizontal cuts at the ends of strokes. Marcela Romero, Pablo Cosgaya and Nicolás Silva drew the Devanagari. The Latin goes back further, to Héctor Gatti’s Chivo, and carries a flavor of late 19th century American type.
Pragati is Hindi for “progress”.
It was built for screens, as a web font and for the desktop, and it saves space hard: you get noticeably more words per line than in a regular-width sans, which is why we would reach for it in a Hindi news site’s headlines or a crowded table. 2 weights only, Regular and Bold.
