Vernon Adams started Mako in 2007 as a minimal sans that any web browser could use freely, on a laptop or on a phone. It joined Google Fonts in 2011, and a July 2023 update grew the glyph set and touched up a few shapes.
It is plain by design, close to Arial in width, in 1 Regular weight. A sun ☀ and an ornamental bracket ❫ sit near the end of the character set, about the only whimsy in it. Without a bold, the browser will fake one wherever your markup asks for strong text, so it suits pages where that happens rarely.
