Ysabeau is a Garamond with the contrast taken out. Christian Thalmann kept the bones of the old book face, its long ascenders and descenders and its easy stride from letter to letter, and drew them as a clean, low-contrast sans meant for long reading, on e-readers in particular. He names EB Garamond and Cormorant as partners.
The Office cut solves a smaller problem. Word processors and spreadsheets seldom let you switch OpenType features on, so this version has tabular lining figures and the second stylistic set baked in as the defaults. Numbers line up in a column and stand at cap height from the first keystroke.
The family:
- 18 styles: 9 weights, Thin through Black, each paired with an italic
- Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese
- 6 stylistic sets, a slashed zero, fractions and ordinals
Those long extenders come at a price. The lowercase is small, reaching less than 2/3 of the way up the capitals, so give it a point or 2 more than you would give a typical sans. For board minutes and budget sheets we like it a lot.
