How tall should Tamil be next to Latin? Indian Type Foundry’s answer in Hind Madurai is a little under the capitals. The head of the Tamil letters falls slightly below the Latin cap height, so depending on weight the Tamil comes to about 80 to 85% of the height of Latin capitals, and it also sits comfortably next to the Latin lowercase.
Jyotish Sonowal designed it, and ITF first published it in 2015 as part of the Hind multi-script project. The name comes from Madurai, the city in Tamil Nadu.
Hind was developed for user interface design. The strokes look monolinear and the construction is humanist, and most stroke endings are cut flat, either horizontal or vertical, almost never on a diagonal, which keeps the spaces between letters clean. Apertures and counters are open. For a monolinear sans, a lot of its design leans toward the traditional side.
There are 5 weights, Light to Bold. The Latin follows Adobe Latin 3, enough for English and the other Western European languages. For an app that has to switch between Tamil and English on the same screen it is a sensible pick, and we would use Medium for buttons.
