Alegreya began as a type system for literature, a super family with serif and sans branches, and Alegreya Sans SC is the small caps companion to the sans. Juan Pablo del Peral drew it for Huerta Tipográfica, and it keeps the humanist proportions and the calligraphic movement that run through the whole system.
There is no ordinary lowercase. Type a small letter and you get a small capital, in every one of the 14 styles, Thin to Black, each with an italic, and del Peral meant those italics to give strong emphasis next to the romans.
Where does a small caps family go? Running heads, table headers, the byline under a headline and the kicker above it, anywhere full capitals would shout. Old style and lining figures come with it in tabular and proportional spacing, plus 5 stylistic sets, and the 1,235 characters cover Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese as well.
For the reading text around it, Alegreya Sans is the natural partner.
