Look closely at a bowl in Athiti and the inside doesn’t match the outside. The outer curve is round and soft, the counter within it is cut at angles, and Cadson Demak’s team did that so each letter carries some strength and some softness at once.

The project grew out of curiosity about where the strokes of handwriting come from. The Latin is an informal humanist sans that keeps the traces of a writing tool while sticking to the traditional construction of roman type, and the Thai is loopless, the simplified informal style. Athiti is the Thai word for the Sun.

Loopless Thai has a practical upside: with simpler details it can be pushed to much darker weights than a formal looped design. Athiti stops at Bold, 6 weights from Extra Light up, and is meant for headlines and body text alike. Where 2 strokes meet, the designers added ink traps, and they took care over the size and position of the vowels and tone marks.

What is it for? Cadson Demak points to content that mixes the formal and the informal, education being their example. A Thai-English school textbook or a learning app is the obvious home.
