Grand Café, opened in 1909
In 1909 Jakob Erbar drew Feder Grotesk, and a century later Olexa Volochay of Cyreal set out to keep as close to that design as he could while making it work on screens. Federo is the result, released in 2011.
The changes he made were small and practical. Details were refined, the contrast came down a little so the strokes would render consistently, the figures were given regular proportions, and the counters were opened up so the letters stay legible. Everything else he tried to leave alone.
It is a display face, 1 weight, 214 Latin glyphs with kerning, and it carries a period feel that a modern sans cannot fake. A café sign or a book cover with an early 20th century subject would be the place for it.
