In 2006 the Thai government held a font competition for the public sector and picked 13 winners. TH Bai Jamjuree CP, drawn by the PITA team of Rapee Suveeranont and Virot Chiraphadhanakul, was among them, and on 7 September 2010 the cabinet named all 13 official national fonts.
Its shapes begin with a rectangle that has rounded corners, and the curves are left slightly unbalanced on purpose. The model was Nopporn, a classic Thai face by Manop Srisomporn that sits close to Eurostile, and the Latin follows that square-sans line too, Eurostyle included among its inspirations.
In 2018 Cadson Demak, the first Thai communication design firm to develop type and a dedicated foundry since 2008, reworked all 13 national fonts with Google: hinting, more weights, wider Unicode coverage. For Bai Jamjuree that meant 6 weights from Extra Light to Bold, each with an italic, Thai, Latin and Vietnamese. The italics keep the width of the uprights. Early in 2019 the national fonts went into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
It works for headings and short passages. For long Thai reading, a looser, rounder face would be easier on the eyes.
