In 2019 Google Fonts had fewer than 10 Japanese families, most of them plain mincho and gothic designs. It set out to widen the shelf, and 1 result was a collaboration with Yoshimichi Ohira that opened his Zen Fonts collection: 23 Japanese and 3 Latin fonts across mincho, gothic, maru and display styles, now the largest Japanese set in the library.

Zen Maru Gothic is the maru, the rounded gothic. Its corners are rounded deeply, which gives text a soft, natural impression, and Ohira’s point is that this softness makes even the thin weight easy to use almost anywhere.

5 weights, Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black, with kana, kanji, Latin, Greek and Cyrillic in 7,800-odd glyphs. A children’s picture book or a friendly app screen suits it.
