Signage is in the name. Anna Giedryś designed Signika for wayfinding and other places where information has to be read fast, at small sizes or from far away, and gave it the 2 things that job asks for, low contrast and a tall x-height. Her reference points were signage faces such as Ronnia, Meta and Tahoma.
Google has carried it since November 2011. In July 2023 the variable version picked up a grade axis meant to correct the optical effects of negative text, though the 5 static weights here, Light to Bold, do not include it.
The feature list is long for a sign face: small caps with caps-to-small-caps, a slashed zero, 5 stylistic sets, contextual alternates and discretionary ligatures. The figures were drawn tabular from the start, so a departures board or a price list lines up without switching anything on.
No italic, though. For a platform sign that hardly matters, and for running text it does.
