Over 600 million people read Devanagari, and they read it in more than 120 languages, Hindi, Nepali, Marathi, Maithili and Bhojpuri among them, plus Sanskrit. It ranks as the 4th most used script in the world. Noto Sans Devanagari is the plain, unmodulated member of Google’s Noto collection for that audience, with the drawing done by Monotype’s design team.
The stroke keeps the same thickness all the way round, headstroke included. No calligraphic swell anywhere. For an interface label or a form field that plainness is what you want, and for a wedding card you would go looking elsewhere.
Devanagari needs shaping, meaning the software assembles the letters as you type and the font has to carry the rules for it, so the OpenType list here holds localized forms and glyph composition next to the usual kerning. Coverage goes past the main block into Vedic Extensions and Devanagari Extended, 6 Unicode blocks if you count the Latin and the punctuation.
9 weights, Thin at 100 through Black at 900, and no italics, which is normal for the script. The Latin riding along covers the basic and extended sets, so an English product name dropped into a Hindi sentence will not fall back to some other font. Our advice would be to save Thin and Extra Light for big display lines, because a hairline headstroke on a phone screen goes faint quickly.
