Matangi is the first variable font project to come out of Nepal, and it began as Prashant Pant’s personal challenge, a way of teaching himself type design by doing it.

He built the letters from plain geometry, squares and circles mostly, which gives them a structured, rational feel, and then cut small ink traps into the joints to keep the color even across sizes and weights. The Latin x-height lines up with the base height of the Devanagari letters, so the 2 scripts sit level when a line mixes them.

The language list leans toward Nepal and northern India: Nepali, Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, Awadhi and Dotyali, with the complex matras and extended Sanskrit ligatures handled. The Graphic Ant published it, and Google added it in April 2025.

7 weights here, Light to Black, all semi-condensed. Pant pitches it at titles, logos, headings and small body text. We’d trust it most in headings, where the squared shapes and the ink traps have the size to show.
