Under the color sits Khaled Hosny’s Reem Kufi. He based it on early Kufic of the Mushafi kind, then fitted it to the grid of Fatimid Kufic and borrowed some of that style’s forms. The deeper source is Mohammed Abdul Qadir, the late master calligrapher who revived Kufic in the 20th century and set down its rules. Santiago Orozco drew the Latin that goes with it.
Reem is an Arabic name meaning a white deer, and the name of Hosny’s daughter.
4 weights run from Regular to Bold. Kufic like this reads as old and historical, with an Islamic feeling, and the family is meant for titles and decoration: an exhibition poster or a book title. Long running text is another matter, and we would not ask it to carry any.
