At 9 or 10 px a normal text face starts to clog: the counters close up, letters touch, an e turns into a blot. PT Sans Caption is the cut of PT Sans drawn to stay open at those sizes, and it sets wide, so every letter gets its own air.
It belongs to the 8 style PT Sans family that ParaType released in 2009 for the Public Types of Russian Federation project, alongside the 4 basic styles and 2 narrow ones. Alexandra Korolkova designed it with Olga Umpeleva and Vladimir Yefimov. Like the rest of the family, Caption carries Cyrillic for the title languages of Russia’s national republics as well as Western and Central European Latin.
Regular and Bold, no italic. Where does it go? Photo credits, footnotes, the small print under a chart, labels on a map that has to work in Russian and English both. Do not set it big. Above about 14 px the extra width that helps it at small sizes starts to look gappy, and plain PT Sans is the better choice there.
