Reem, an Arabic girl’s name, means a white deer, and Khaled Hosny’s daughter carries it too.
The letters are Kufic. Hosny started from early Kufic of the Mushafi type, then fitted it onto the grid of the later Fatimid Kufic and borrowed some Fatimid shapes along the way. Most of it rests on the work of Mohammed Abdul Qadir, the calligrapher who revived Kufic in the 20th century and wrote down its rules.
Hosny’s own advice is to use it for display, in titles and decoration, because the old Kufic look reads at once as historical or Islamic. That is a strength on a book cover about history, or the heading of a Ramadan program, and a reason to keep it away from long running text.
Santiago Orozco drew the Latin to go with it. There are 4 weights, Regular to Bold.
