Kostas Bartsokas conceived Commissioner as a variable family with 3 voices, and the interesting part is how the letters change between them. In the default voice it is a grotesque with straight stems. Turn up the flair axis and the terminals start to swell until they become something close to glyphic serifs, with the joints getting more idiosyncratic on the way. The volume axis then sharpens those serifs into wedges. 1 family can go from plain sans to something almost carved.
Under all 3 sits a low-contrast humanist sans with almost classical proportions, and the capitals and lowercase are proportioned differently enough to give text some warmth.
As static files you get 9 weights from Thin (100) to Black (900), and they cover Greek and Cyrillic as well as Latin, with Vietnamese. For a magazine or an organization that works in several alphabets, that is a lot of ground in 1 family. We’d set long text in Regular or Light and only go to Black for a big headline.
