Lautaro Hourcade was chasing legibility at small sizes when Gafata grew its quirks. The odd details that make it whimsical, he says, came out of that search.
He intended it for medium-long text in books, magazines and on web pages, and in 2013 he went back twice, first to respace it and then to rehint it. It is a narrow face with 1 weight and a stylistic set for a few alternate forms.
With no bold or italic it needs a partner for emphasis. A sidebar or a run of captions suits it well.
