House numbers came first. In 2017 Slagskeppet, a Swedish housing client, wanted new address numerals for its entrances, and Kristian Möller drew them to sit right with the buildings, their proportions and their materials, which go back to the architect Sture Elmén in the 1940s. An alphabet grew out of those numbers, then more weights and more languages, and the whole thing went into Möller’s Dicotype library as Afacad.
The lowercase is small for a sans. Its letters reach only about 2/3 of the way up the capitals, so Afacad looks a size smaller than its neighbors on a page and wants bumping up 1 or 2 steps. It is narrow too, which means the bigger size costs you little width.
4 weights from Regular to Bold, with italics exactly as wide as their romans. Contextual alternates, a slashed zero, tabular figures and 4 stylistic sets fill out the OpenType side, and Vietnamese is covered.
Would we put it on a building? Gladly. In a magazine it would go on headlines and pull quotes, where the low lowercase leaves a calm band of air between lines; in a dense app, where every pixel of x-height counts, we would think twice.
