Tamil makes do with 18 consonants and 12 vowels, a small set for a Brahmic script, and about 70 million people read it, in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and Mauritius. Besides Tamil itself it writes languages such as Irula, Badaga, Kurumba, Paniya and Saurashtra.
Jelle Bosma of the Monotype Design Team drew Noto Sans Tamil as a plain, unmodulated sans, part of Google’s Noto collection, which aims to cover every modern and ancient writing system. It joined Google’s library in November 2020.
You get 9 weights, Thin to Black, and that spread is the family’s strong suit. A Tamil news site or an app can run headings in Bold or Black and body in Regular without pairing 2 unrelated fonts, and the Thin is there for large display lines.
The script needs software that supports complex text shaping.
